The Zamfara Government says it will upgrade one hospital in each of the 147 wards across the state as part of its commitment to improving primary healthcare delivery.
Alhaji Yusuf Mafara, the Executive Secretary, Zamfara Primary Healthcare Board, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Wednesday.
Mafara said that the project was part of the board’s plan to provide modern primary healthcare facilities in rural communities across the state.
“We plan to carry out this project before the end of 2017; we have already identified all the hospitals and we will soon embark on their total renovation.
“We have started the procurement of health equipment and materials to be placed in the hospitals.
“Furthermore, the state government has approved the recruitment of health workers including medical doctors, nurses, and community health officers to be posted to these hospitals,’’ he said.
According to the scribe, the project, when completed, will assist in reducing congestion in secondary and tertiary hospitals.
Apart from the hospital renovation, Mafara said that the board organised a stakeholders’ roundtable on polio eradication in collaboration with UNICEF on Tuesday at Karma Hotel Conference hall in Gusau.
According to him, the meeting discussed how to address various issues and challenges of polio eradication in the state.
Participants who attended the meeting included traditional rulers, council chairmen, academicians, religious/community leaders, NGOs, women representatives and the media.
The executive secretary commended the state’s traditional rulers for their support and cooperation on polio eradication activities, adding that it had resulted in various successes.(NAN)
