In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, coordinator of the group, Dangana Ishaya, said the North-east region has been key to the political evolution in the country, adding that the zone was always a key deciding block for a winning party.
The statement said: “The question on the minds of some concerned North-east youth is: What are the sins of the region that have resulted in its ‘quasi-underdog position’ in the Northern political arrangement? It appears the region is always carried along in electioneering, but immediately victory is won, it is relegated and marginalised in the apportioning of political offices.”
The statement said that zoning the position of speaker to North-east “will greatly serve to further strengthen the democratisation of the North and also galvanise the synergy being witnessed hitherto,” adding: “With the North-east being home to the Northern minorities, ceding the seat to the region will help cement the political union of the North and further engender the efforts for unity and foster a virile political movement.
“We believe, on this occasion, that the handlers of the party that will be in the helm of affairs in the next administration should, at least, do the needful and zone the speakership of the House of Representatives to the region.”
