One thousand five hundred dairy cattle in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State will be vaccinated against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) to fast-track milk production sufficiency in the country.
The vaccination exercise is being organised by Outspan Nigeria Limited, the dairy business of Olam Food Ingredients (OFI), in partnership with the Kano Dairy and Livestock Husbandry Cooperative Union (KADALCU) which comprises over 70,000 smallholder dairy farmers.

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health, FMD is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of livestock that has significant economic impact. The disease affects cattle, swine, sheep, goats and other cloven-hoofed ruminants. Intensively reared animals are more susceptible to the disease than traditional breeds.
Flagging off the exercise, Mr Ahmed Adetunji, the Manager, Outspan, Kano, who represented Mr Vipin Patel, the National Sales Operations Manager of Olam, said, “The vaccination exercise will remove constraints around dairy cattle health management which directly affects the cattle productivity level and by extension increases the quantity and quality of milk being produced locally.”
The primary objective of the vaccination exercise, according to the organisers, is to improve cattle health management in the sector and enhance the milk production level in the state.
