Two suspected robbers narrowly escaped being lynched by a mob at Chicken Junction, Wuse 2, Abuja on Friday.
A witness, Raymond Jonathan, said the suspects, operating in an unmarked taxi, attempted to dispossess a female passenger of her belongings.
He explained that shortly after the victim boarded the vehicle, one of the suspects tried to snatch her phone and demanded her bank account’s PIN under threat. He said the woman raised the alarm, attracting passersby, who forced the taxi to a stop and dragged the suspects out.
“Immediately she raised the alarm, some passersby flagged down the vehicle. As the suspects tried to escape, the mob apprehended them and started beating them with sticks while others pelted them with stones,” Jonathan said.

According to him, police operatives later arrived in a Hilux van, rescued the suspects from the mob and drove them away.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command, SP Josephine Adeh, said police responded swiftly to a distress call in the early hours of Friday.
She said, “Two persons were found lying on the ground around Chicken Junction, Wuse 2. The operatives promptly rescued them alive and rushed them to the National Hospital for medical treatment.”
Adeh added that members of the public dispersed on sighting the police, noting that no arrest was made.
She further said the FCT Commissioner of Police Ajao S. Adewale, had directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Wuse Division to conduct an extensive investigation into the incident.
The commissioner also urged residents to remain calm and go about their lawful activities, assuring that further details would be made available in due course.
