2 women in court over alleged N2.06m rice fraud

Two women, Sekinat Olayiwola (37) and Zainab Adesina (30), have been arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court on charges of conspiracy, fraud, and stealing.

They are accused of defrauding a rice trader of N2.06 million.

The prosecutor, Corporal Akeem Akinloye, told the court that the defendants allegedly conspired to defraud the complainant, Rukayat Adeboye, on May 30 at a sawmill in Ibadan.

According to Akinloye, the women fraudulently obtained N2,060,000 from Adeboye under the pretence of supplying her with 40 bags of rice but failed to do so.

The prosecutor claimed the money was transferred to an account belonging to Olayiwola and that the defendants converted it for their personal use.

The alleged offences violate Sections 390(9), 419, and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty and their defence counsel, Mr. Abdulfatai Ogundeji, requested the court to grant them bail on liberal terms.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Olabisi Ogunkanmi, granted each defendant bail in the sum of N1 million, with two sureties each in like sum.

She ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relative of the defendants and adjourned the case until November 27, for hearing.
