A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has expressed confidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be removed from power in the 2027 general elections, insisting that alleged legal and administrative pressure against opposition parties will not derail Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

Olawepo-Hashim, in a statement yesterday, accused the ruling party of engaging in actions aimed at weakening opposition participation ahead of the next election cycle. He described the trend as troubling and reminiscent of past attempts to undermine political pluralism in the country.

According to him, similar efforts in the past failed in the face of popular resistance. He recalled the struggle against military rule under the late General Sani Abacha, which he said ultimately ended in victory for democratic forces.

“Our founding fathers deliberately chose multiparty democracy and embedded it in our constitutional framework. That legacy will be preserved,” Hashim said, warning that Nigeria would not slide into authoritarian or one-party rule.

He also raised concerns over what he described as selective administrative decisions in the political party registration process, alleging that some associations perceived to be aligned with the ruling party were being favoured.

Hashim called on Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant in defending democratic norms, stressing that democracy could only be protected through transparency, accountability and adherence to constitutional principles.

He said he remained confident that Nigerians would use the ballot to remove the APC from power peacefully and constitutionally in 2027.
