The Kaduna State Police Command on Tuesday confirmed the death of a 12-year-old boy, Abubakar Muhammed, following a suspected accidental discharge of a locally made firearm (dane gun).
The command dismissed earlier rumours of an explosion in the state, stating that there was no blast as widely speculated.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Mansir Hassan, said a distress call was received around 8:30 a.m. regarding a suspected explosion on Josawa Road in Abakpa, Kaduna.
He said a police team, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kawo Division, was promptly deployed to the scene.

Hassan said the boy died on the spot, while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Garrison Commander of 1 Division Nigerian Army, State Director of DSS, and the Chairman of Kaduna North Local Government visited the scene.
A thorough on-site assessment ruled out any explosion. Preliminary investigations by the Police Anti-Bomb Squad revealed that a Dane gun was accidentally discharged, leading to the boy’s death, he said.
He added that further investigations are ongoing to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The boy’s father, Muhammad Lawal, said he received a distress call and rushed to the scene, only to find that his son had already died.
“I was told he had been sent to buy sugar when the incident happened. After being shot, he ran back into the house, crying, ‘I was shot, I was shot,’ before collapsing,” he said.
Lawal said the boy died before a neighbour could take him to the hospital.
