The Adamawa State Government has committed N2 billion towards the procurement of agricultural inputs ahead of the 2025 farming season, as part of its strategy to address food insecurity and empower local farmers.

This was disclosed on Monday in Yola by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. David Finchiwa Jatau, during an interview with journalists.

According to Jatau, the initiative is designed to strengthen the agricultural sector by equipping farmers, particularly youths with essential inputs to support early and effective farming activities.

“The N2 billion worth of agricultural inputs will be distributed across all 21 local government areas (LGAs) as part of the government’s comprehensive agricultural intervention programme,” he stated.

He revealed that one of the key components of the programme involves the development of 300 hectares of farmland in each LGA, which will be allocated to 300 youths for cultivation.

“These beneficiaries will receive inputs such as fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides at subsidized rates and they will retain full ownership of the proceeds from their harvests,” Jatau explained.

The commissioner noted that while the government had previously provided support to farmers through the distribution of inputs, this year’s intervention is being rolled out earlier to maximize its impact.

He further disclosed that 10,000 bags of assorted fertilizers have already been procured and are ready for immediate distribution.
“The programme is currently underway in six LGAs: Madagali, Michika, Hong, Maiha, Demsa, and Ganye,” he said.

He added that the initiative will be extended to the remaining LGAs by next year’s rainy season.
“Once fully implemented, we anticipate a significant reduction in youth unemployment across the state,” he said.

Jatau highlighted that many young people in the state are enthusiastic about farming but lack the necessary capital to get started.

He linked rising rates of crime and insecurity to hunger and lack of economic opportunity.
“Many youths are eager to venture into farming, but they simply don’t have the financial means. This is why His Excellency, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, felt compelled to intervene,” Jatau concluded.
