Troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade, deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Babana, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, have neutralised two bandits during a gun duel in the early hours of Thursday.

The soldiers, who were on high alert, engaged a group of armed bandits attempting to infiltrate the Babana axis.

A vigilante commander, Gina Gana, told our correspondent on Thursday night that the military offensive occurred at about 2:50 a.m.

He said two of the bandits were killed, while several others sustained injuries. He added that some soldiers were also wounded during the clash and that weapons were recovered from the attackers.

Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, confirmed the incident on Thursday night.

According to him, the criminals were subdued with superior firepower, forcing them to retreat in disarray.

Nwankwo confirmed that one officer and a soldier sustained gunshot injuries to their legs during the encounter, adding that they are responding to treatment.

The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, commended the troops for their resilience and vigilance.

He assured that the brigade would continue to intensify operations and employ all legitimate means to rid the area of criminal elements and protect law-abiding citizens.
