A newborn baby has been discovered inside an uncompleted building in the Pegi area of Kuje, located within the Kuje Area Council of the FCT.
The baby is suspected to have been abandoned by a yet-to-be-identified woman from the community.
Jacob Barnabas, a resident of Pegi, said another resident found the baby on Saturday around 8:43am after entering the building to relieve himself.
He said, upon entering, the resident heard the cry of a newborn and traced it to where it had been left, covered with a cloth.
‘’The man quickly alerted others nearby, who rushed to the building and confirmed the discovery.’’
According to Barnabas, some neighbours immediately informed the local vigilantes, who, along with other security operatives, went to the scene and took the baby to Kuje General Hospital.
Emma Daniel, a vigilante member, confirmed the discovery, adding that the baby was later transferred to a motherless babies’ home as directed by a community elder.
“It was on Saturday morning when vigilantes were alerted that a newborn baby had been found inside an uncompleted building.
We immediately mobilized to the scene where we found the baby, which was later taken to the hospital in Kuje,” he stated.
Daniel also told our reporter that a similar incident occurred last month when a newborn was found at a refuse dump in the Kuchiako area of the council.
“This incident of dumping newborn babies has become so rampant because a similar incident happened last month when a newborn baby was also dumped at a refuse site around Kuchiako area, and up till this moment, we are yet to identify the mother of that baby,” he explained.
He added, “Also, the same thing happened in Shadadi, where another baby was found dumped at a refuse site in that area again.”
