Residents of Bwari in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at the weekend spoke about what they are passing through to access potable water despite hosting the treatment plant that supplies water to the territory.
Our correspondent reports that the treatment plant where the body of water from Gurara Dam is treated is at UsumaDam, located in a community a few kilometres away from Bwari town.
Abuja Metro further reports that despite being the headquarters of the area council, only a few areas like the staff quarters, area council secretariat and the area behind the water board have access to portable water from the FCT Water Board.
Supply of water to other areas has since been cut off due to what officials of the board said was a result of broken pipes.
Other major towns within the council, such as Dutsen, Kubwa and Dawaki, all have facilities for portable water from the board.
Some of the residents of Bwari decry the situation whereby far away towns like Gwagwalada could access water while the town hosting the treatment plant does not.
The board, while giving reasons why the town has not been able to access the water fully from the board, said the typography of the town was making it difficult to pump water with high pressure from the Usuma Dam, which is in the lower part of Bwari.
The board further explained that previous efforts made to extend water to the town were also hampered by frequent breakage of pipes within the distribution channels.
But residents of the town are pleading with the FCT Administration, the water board and other concerned authorities to do everything possible to restore water supply to the town.
My Joseph Samson, a resident, said they are passing through hell to access water in the community, adding that the few that have boreholes still find it difficult to pump due to unstable power supply and the high cost of petrol to power generators.
He said,” Honestly, we are suffering from a lack of water in Bwari. It is unfortunate that the town that is hosting the treatment plant supplying the entire Abuja could not have access to the water while they are supplying other towns within the council like Dutsen, Kubwa and even Dawaki. They must do something to address this situation.’’
Another resident, Joshua Zaki, also pleaded with the FCTA to find ways of reticulating water from the board to Bwari town.
