Dispatch rider crushed to death in Lagos
A commercial dispatch rider has lost his life in an accident involving an articulated trailer at the Ilupeju Bypass area of Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed in the incident, saying that investigation revealed that the dispatch rider was allegedly involved in a struggle for right of way with a commercial minibus popularly called “Korope” before losing control of the motorcycle and crashing into the moving trailer along the busy Ilupeju corridor.
The collision reportedly resulted in severe injuries that led to the rider’s instant death at the scene.
General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed that operatives of the Agency monitoring traffic activities around the Mushin axis swiftly responded after receiving distress alerts concerning the incident.
He said officials immediately commenced rescue and traffic management operations to prevent further disruption along the route.
Bakare-Oki stated that LASTMA personnel successfully recovered the remains of the deceased trapped beneath the trailer while extensive traffic control measures were put in place to ease congestion caused by the accident.
“Officials of the State Environmental Health Management Unit were also mobilized to evacuate the corpse from the scene following the gravity of the incident and the obstruction caused by spilled contents from the trailer,” he added.
The LASTMA boss added that officials of the agency worked in collaboration with other emergency response agencies to maintain public safety and restore normal vehicular movement within the axis during the rescue and evacuation exercise.
“The wreckage of the dispatch motorcycle and the articulated trailer involved in the accident were later handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with extant traffic laws.
“Security operatives from the Ilupeju Police Division also provided security reinforcement throughout the operation,” he said.
