A tragic road accident involving a heavily-loaded bucket truck claimed the lives of a pedestrian and a motorcyclist along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos on Sunday morning.
The fatal crash occurred at the Iyana-Iba Flyover near the main gate of Lagos State University on the Badagry Expressway corridor.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver was allegedly speeding from the Volkswagen area toward Badagry when he knocked down and killed a pedestrian.
Taofiq said the driver failed to stop after the initial impact and continued driving along the highway.
In a bid to stop the fleeing vehicle, a motorcyclist, accompanied by another individual, reportedly chased after the truck.
However, the truck driver allegedly rammed into the motorcycle during the pursuit, killing the rider instantly, while the second occupant escaped unhurt.
Officials of the LASTMA, however, arrested the truck driver, who attempted to flee from the accident scene, and handed him over to the police for further investigation.
“Operatives of LASTMA Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team, who were on routine overnight patrol along the expressway, swiftly responded to the scene and evacuated the remains of the deceased motorcyclist, whose body had reportedly become trapped beneath the truck’s front wheel.
“The truck driver was immediately apprehended by LASTMA officials who handed him over to security operatives attached to the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further investigation and necessary legal action,” he said.
Taofiq further disclosed that the remains of the motorcyclist were evacuated by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), while the body of the pedestrian was later released to family members who arrived at the scene.
“Both the truck and the damaged motorcycle involved in the accident were also moved to the police post pending the conclusion of investigations,” he stated.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
He described the incident as a reminder of the dangers associated with reckless driving, particularly among operators of articulated vehicles and heavy-duty trucks.
Bakare-Oki urged motorists, especially truck drivers, to obey traffic regulations and speed limits at all times to prevent avoidable tragedies on the roads.
He also reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to aggressive traffic enforcement, emergency rescue operations and collaboration with security agencies to enhance road safety across Lagos State.
