The federal government has announced plans to clear 500 hectares of land in Benue State to support ranching and dairy production.

Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Maiha, disclosed this during a visit to the Benue Livestock Investigation and Breeding Centre in Raav, Gwer East Local Government Area.

Although the centre has been allocated 2,400 hectares, an initial 500 hectares will be developed to kickstart the project.

Maiha expressed concerns over the underutilisation of the facility, which currently houses only 37 animals.

He said a committee will be set up to propose essential infrastructure such as animal pens, isolation centres, maternity pens, and staff housing.

The minister also said the government plans to collaborate with Joseph Sarwua Tarka University, Makurdi, to support research efforts.

Dr Aondoakaa Asambe, Director General of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, said ranching is key to resolving the state’s security challenges.

He noted that the initiative would help displaced farmers return to their ancestral lands and boost the livestock sector.

During his visit, Maiha also toured the International Cattle Market in Makurdi and held a closed-door meeting with key livestock industry stakeholders.

He assured that with proper investment, the facility could enhance Nigeria’s dairy and meat production while supporting both local and export markets.
