The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has stated that granting autonomy to local governments will significantly reduce the insecurity plaguing parts of the country.
Odunayo Ategbero, Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Trustees (BoT), stated this during the association’s executive meeting in Abuja at the weekend.
Ategbero commended the progress made in implementing the Supreme Court judgment that granted financial autonomy to local governments.
He noted that the federal government’s implementation committee has achieved significant milestones despite facing challenges.

“The committee has directed local governments to open accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ensure seamless financial operations,” he said.
Ategbero emphasised that local government autonomy is crucial for addressing critical issues such as security, health, and education at the grassroots level.
He attributed Nigeria’s insecurity challenges to the failure of the local government system and called for the incorporation of traditional institutions into the system to enhance their role in tackling security issues.
