Adamawa State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, CON, was among governors from the Northeast geopolitical zone who convened in Damaturu for the 11th meeting of the North-East Governors’ Forum. The high-level gathering focused on pressing regional challenges, including insecurity, infrastructural development, and youth empowerment.

The meeting culminated in a communique outlining the collective resolutions of the governors aimed at fostering peace, development, and economic revitalization across the region.

The Forum commended the Federal Government for its ongoing efforts in addressing national security and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting strategies that tackle emerging threats. However, it expressed concern over the resurgence of insurgent activities in the subregion and called for a reassessment of counterinsurgency strategies involving the military, security agencies, and community leaders.

Highlighting the need for a holistic approach to peacebuilding, the governors emphasized that resolving insecurity in the region requires more than military action. They advocated for tackling the root causes of unrest by investing in vocational and technical education, improving infrastructure, promoting education, and reducing poverty.

Poor road infrastructure, identified as a contributor to insecurity, was another key topic. The Forum urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address long-abandoned projects in the region, which they said are crucial to combating poverty and enhancing development.

In a renewed push for economic growth, the governors pledged to open up the subregion to investments in agriculture, climate resilience, industrialization, and skills acquisition. These initiatives, they said, would provide employment opportunities and deter youth from being recruited by insurgents.

The Forum also called on the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) to strengthen its collaboration with state governments and focus on urgent development needs in transportation, education, and healthcare. It emphasized the importance of timely delivery of projects and staying aligned with the Commission’s core mandate of rebuilding the region.

Further resolutions included supporting the expansion of the Nigerian Law School Yola Campus through the provision of hostels, water supply, and other essential facilities to boost its capacity. The Forum also resolved to partner with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education (NCAOOSCE) to integrate vulnerable children into formal and vocational education systems across the region.

The Forum announced that its next meeting will be held from July 27 to 29, 2025, in Jalingo, Taraba State.

Governor Fintiri’s participation reaffirms Adamawa State’s commitment to regional cooperation in addressing security, education, and infrastructural challenges facing the Northeast.
