The Benue State Government has launched the state’s first-ever electric vehicles, a set of eco-friendly solar-powered cars, aimed at reducing transportation costs and promoting clean energy.
The initiative, spearheaded in partnership with Esse Mobility, reportedly marks the debut of Africa’s first solar-powered taxi project, with Makurdi serving as the pilot city.
Our correspondent reports that the vehicles are powered by solar energy, producing zero emissions, and are designed to offer affordable, efficient and environmentally safe transport.
Founder of Esse Mobility and technical partner on the project, Okey Esse, applauded Governor Hyacinth Alia’s vision, noting that the foundation laid by his administration has made Benue ripe for innovative and competitive development.
“These cars are powered by the sun, with batteries that charge through solar energy. We’ve equipped them with advanced security gadgets, making every journey safe and monitored. They’re also designed to be user-friendly and safe for both the driver and the environment,” he said.
Esse disclosed that the target is to roll out 500 units across the state by December, starting from Makurdi and gradually expanding to other local government areas like Otukpo and Gboko.
He added that the long-term plan includes establishing local assembly plants in the state to boost job creation.
“Our goal is to generate at least 8,500 jobs by the end of the year through direct employment, charging station operations, and administrative support,” Esse said.
The Managing Director of the Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC), Raymond Asemakaha, described the launch as a major step toward reducing carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
“This innovation supports the global movement towards sustainable transportation. With Governor Alia’s commitment, Benue is proud to lead the way in embracing future mobility technologies,” Asemakaha said.
He emphasised that the initiative will not only improve the state’s environmental footprint but also contribute significantly to job creation and economic growth.
Also speaking, BIPC’s Head of Business Development and Strategy, Mrs Theresa Abeda, noted that the electric vehicles will revolutionise urban mobility in Benue and lower transport costs for residents.
“This project aligns perfectly with the state government’s vision for a cleaner and greener environment,” she said, thanking partners for their commitment to sustainable development.
