Kano residents have been urged to desist from dumping of refuse on waterways to avoid flooding as the rainy season sets in.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso made the call on Monday during a visit to the dumpsite in Jakara, Municipal Local Government Area of the state as part of Keep Kano Clean 2021 campaign.

The campaign was initiated to create awareness and address environmental challenges, such as flooding, erosion, and desertification.
“In Jakara dump site/drainage alone more than 15 trucks were evacuated and our vehicles are still busy evacuating the refuse until it is all cleared even if it can extend to 10 days”, Getso said.
The commissioner added that the state government had collaborated with a company to ensure that all evacuated solid waste is recycled for power generation and fertilizer.
He said the ministry would also collaborate with Kano State Urban Development Agency (KANUPDA) to demolish all structures constructed illegally and were blocking the waterways.
