Gunmen, on Wednesday evening, reportedly invaded the Vigilante Operations Post at Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area, located along the Egbe-Eruku Road, killing two of its members on the spot.
Earlier in the morning, the hoodlums had shot and killed three policemen at a checkpoint in the area.
The vigilantes’ death has, therefore, increased the number of people killed in the Wednesday attack on the town to five.
According to the residents, the hoodlums struck again around 4.30pm, leading to a fierce exchange of fire power with security operatives, hunters and vigilantes.
“The town has lost two of its vigilantes in the Wednesday evening attack. The hoodlums shot their way to the vigilante post located at the Egbe-Eruku Road, a boundary area with Kwara State.
“We are so sad to have lost two vigilantes, Mr. Samuel Kayode and his colleague, who fell into their assailants’ bullets while on duty in the Egbe vigilante post during the attack”, said Elder Juwon Kayode, an Egbe resident.
The irate youths in the community reportedly demonstrated their displeasure with the twin incidents with roadblocks and burning of tyres at strategic entry ports to the town.
The action of the youth halted vehicular movement for hours, particularly trailers and other heavy trucks along the Egbe-Isanlu-Kabba Road.
Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West, confirmed the incidents in a statement, saying, “My office has been inundated with reported cases of killings on the outskirts of Egbe Okoleke Isanlu Esa road where three policemen were ambushed and killed”.
“There was also another reported case, this evening, that the Vigilantes Operations Post along Egbe Eruku road, a boundary town between Kogi and Kwara State, was attacked with the killing of two Vigilante officers, bringing the number of casualties to five, in one day”.
