A Kano State High Court on Friday sentenced a housewife, Fadila Adamu, to death by hanging for kidnapping and throwing an eight-year-old girl into a well, an act that led to her death.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Yusuf Muhammad-Ubale, ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the defendant to death by hanging.

The culpable homicide and kidnapping cases have been ongoing for six years.

The judgment reads, “That the sentences provided as rightly submitted by the prosecuting counsel are mandatory. My hands are tied as there is no room for exercise of discretion. The convict is therefore sentenced as follows: For the offence of culpable homicide, the convict is hereby sentenced to death by hanging till she is dead. This is the sentence provided under Section 2.

“As per the offence of kidnapping under Section 274 (b) of the Penal Code, and considering the fact that Aisha Sani died as a result of being kidnapped, the sentence provided is equally mandatory. The convict is hereby sentenced to death by hanging until she is confirmed dead.”

The prosecuting counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the incident occurred on July 14, 2019, in Tudun Wada, Nasarawa area of Kano State.

He explained that Fadila kidnapped the child at around 4:45pm from her Islamiyya School and took her to her house in Sabuwar Gandu area.

According to him, the accused lied to her sister, claiming that the girl was the daughter of a friend who had traveled to Ghana and had asked her to look after the child until she returned.

The accused, according to him, later took Aisha to an abandoned well and threw her into the well alive which resulted in Aisha’s death.
