A private company, Bharat Biotech, is developing COVAXIN alongside the government-run Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Studies have so far shown that the vaccine is safe and effective, a senior government scientist told the Reuters news agency.

Bharat Biotech, a private company that is developing COVAXIN alongside the government-run Indian Council of Medical Research had earlier hoped to launch it only in the second quarter of next year.

A senior ICMR scientist Rajni Kant, who is also a member of its COVID-19 task force, on Thursday at the headquarters of the research centre in New Delhi said the vaccine has “shown good efficacy”.

If launched in February, COVAXIN would be the first India-made vaccine to be rolled out.
