Tricycle riders and Kano State Government Wednesday evening reached an agreement over registration levies for new tricycles and renewal of licences.

Commercial tricyclists in the state had embarked on a three days strike action last week to protest the new levies.

The peace deal was brokered by the Nigerian Bar Association leadership in Kano at a meeting that lasted about six hours and attended by Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA), tricycle riders and their legal representatives.

The meeting resolved that the amount be slashed from N8,000 to N5,000 for renewal and N12,000 for registration from N18,000, to be paid between January and end of February.

The Managing Director of KAROTA, Baffa Babba Danagundi, said failure to pay within the agreed timeframe would attract payment of the previousN18,000 for new registration and N8,000 for renewal.

Daily Trust recalls that the riders suspended their strike to allow for a negotiation with the state government.

The lawyer of the tricycle operators, Abba Hikima, had said the strike was suspended after the agreement with the government that the levy would be reduced.
