Kogi: Lawmakers Win Return Tickets, but losers allege Irregularities

Serving members of the House of Representatives in Kogi State have secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) tickets for the 2027 general elections.
They were elected at Saturday primaries which recorded a heavy turnout at designated centres, although delays were reported in some areas.
The exercise was largely peaceful, according to party officials.
Among the lawmakers who emerged victorious were Abdullahi Ali Halims for Ankpa/Olamaboro/Omala Federal Constituency; Hon. Suleiman Danladi Aguye for Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency; Hon. Sanni Egidi Abdulkareem for Ajaokuta Federal Constituency; and Hon. Leke Abejide for Yagba Federal Constituency.

Hon. Aguye was returned unopposed in Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency, while Leke Abejide, who recently defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the APC, polled 892 votes to defeat his closest rival, Joseph Babagbemi, who scored two votes.
In Okene/Ogori-Magongo Federal Constituency, Sanni Salau Ogembe emerged winner amid controversy surrounding his alleged disqualification by the party’s screening committee.
“Remain calm and do not be distracted by rumours. Stay peaceful and united as we await official communication. Together, we remain strong,” Ogembe wrote on his social media page during the controversy over his alleged disqualification.
Ogembe defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he contested the House of Representatives election in 2023 but lost to the incumbent lawmaker, Hon. Tijani Ahmed Ozigi.
The victorious aspirants commended party leaders and supporters for ensuring a peaceful process.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, also praised party members for conducting themselves peacefully and in line with party guidelines.
He described the primaries as transparent and democratic, urging party members to unite ahead of the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, some aspirants and their supporters have raised concerns over alleged irregularities during the exercise.
Muhammed Yahaya Dongo in Okene/Ogori-Magongo Federal Constituency and Joseph Babagbemi in Yagba Federal Constituency accused party officials of lacking transparency.
They alleged non-availability of electoral materials and absence of officials in several wards.
