Kwara: Fire guts motor park housing 38 vehicles

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Saturday affected a motor park housing about 38 vehicles at Sawmill Garage in the Odo-Okun area of Ilorin, Kwara State.

The incident, which began at about 2:48 a.m., affected two vehicles — a Toyota Sienna and an 18-seater bus with registration numbers JJJ876HJ and KSF223SK, respectively.

The driver of the bus said he had returned from a long-distance trip the previous afternoon and was resting inside the vehicle when he noticed flames coming from the bus.

People at the garage attempted to move other vehicles away from the scene, but the nearby Toyota Sienna also caught fire before firefighters arrived.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said firefighters responded promptly and contained the fire at about 3:03 a.m., preventing it from spreading to other vehicles in the park.

He added that no casualties were recorded.

Adekunle said the Director of the Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, advised vehicle owners and transport operators to regularly inspect their vehicles for fuel leaks or electrical faults, particularly after long journeys.

He also urged transport operators to maintain adequate spacing between parked vehicles and ensure that portable fire extinguishers are available for quick response during emergencies.

The fire service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state and encouraged members of the public to promptly report fire incidents.
