NAMYO Africa regional office to be named after Kwame Nkrumah

The Africa Regional Board of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organisation (NAMYO) has announced plans to establish its Africa Regional Office in Nigeria, with the facility to be named in honour of Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, a revered Pan-Africanist and founding figure of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
In a statement signed by Bello Shagari, Vice Chair of NAMYO Africa Region, the organisation said the decision reflects its commitment to promoting peace, unity, and cooperation across the continent.
“Nkrumah, alongside Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia, Jawaharlal Nehru of India, and Sukarno of Indonesia, played a pioneering role in the founding of NAM in 1961,” the statement read.
“Within Africa, Nkrumah’s leadership, together with that of leaders such as Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Ahmed Sékou Touré of Guinea, and Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, laid the foundation for Africa’s strong presence in the movement.”
The regional office, to be located in West Africa, is expected to serve as a hub for youth engagement in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
NAMYO Africa said it will focus on fostering integration, youth development, free movement, and intra-African trade.
The organisation also noted that the office will support efforts to restore stability within the ECOWAS region, which has faced political and security challenges in recent years.
“The naming of the office after Kwame Nkrumah symbolises not only his legacy of Pan-Africanism but also NAMYO Africa’s vision of building bridges across the continent,” Shagari said.
NAMYO Africa has initiated consultations with Nigeria’s Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Youth Development for partnership, and is engaging stakeholders across Africa and beyond, including the current Chair of NAM, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda.
The Africa Regional Board of NAMYO comprises representatives from Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, reflecting the organization’s pan-African character and collective spirit.
