The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has inaugurated the state’s steering committee for the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) which will replace the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) at a ceremony at the government house in Lafia.

He said the committee would tackle erosion, improve agriculture and combat desert encroachment, noting that his administration appreciated both the federal government and the World Bank which intervention under NEWMAP saw to the construction of rainstorm drainage from the emir’s palace through the Rice Mill area to address flooding.

Sule expressed confidence that the committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Environment, Yakubu Kwanta, with the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Nuhu Oshafu, as co-chairman, would achieve its objectives.

The development objective of ACReSAL is to increase the implementation of sustainable landscape management practices in targeted watersheds in Northern Nigeria and strengthen Nigeria’s long-term enabling environment for integrated climate-resilient landscape management.
