The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced the construction of a 2.5-kilometre road and two bridges in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The Managing Director of the Commission, Alhaji Muhammad Goni Alkali, disclosed this to newsmen while handing over the project site to Eighteen Engineering Company (EEC) in Potiskum.
He said the road and bridge project would connect Kara, Masaka, and Mazaga communities, while one of the bridges would address the long-standing challenge faced by the Tandari community due to the absence of a bridge linking the area to Potiskum town.
Alkali, who was represented by the Yobe State Coordinator of the Commission, Professor Ali Ibrahim Abbas, explained that the construction of the road and bridges aligns with the Commission’s mandate on post-recovery efforts and resettlement.

He noted that the project became necessary as it would open up the areas for easier and safer transportation of goods and services, as well as improve access to healthcare facilities, schools, markets, and other socio-economic activities essential for livelihoods and development.
“Once this project is completed, the socio-economic development of the areas and the economic status of residents of Potiskum Local Government Area will improve.
“One of the key benefits of this project is the development of local capacity and local content. Residents of Potiskum, including engineers, artisans, and labourers, will be employed during the construction, thereby creating job opportunities and wealth within the community beyond just road construction,” he said.
