The Joint Workers Union of the New Nigerian Newspapers (NNN) has renewed its plea to the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) for the prompt settlement of long-overdue entitlements, following the death of 111 unpaid retirees.
The latest victim, Barrister Yusuf Onuh Abubakar, former Company Secretary of NNN, died on April 18, 2025. His death adds to a growing list of pensioners who passed away without receiving their benefits.
Union Chairman, Comrade Sule Friday Idoko, expressed frustration over the delayed payments, noting that 34 other beneficiaries are in urgent need of medical care — with many battling diabetes, hypertension, and ulcers.
“We continue to lose our members. The number has now reached 111. Some retirees are bedridden and unable to pay their hospital bills. Timely payment of these entitlements could save lives,” Idoko lamented in an interview with Daily Trust.
While acknowledging that the governors have been receptive during meetings, Idoko criticised the slow pace of bureaucracy, which he says is eroding members’ hopes.
Another beneficiary, who requested anonymity, described the rising death toll as both tragic and unacceptable. “Even with 111 deaths, the bureaucracy continues. What more must happen before the authorities act?”
Adding to the tragedy, it was gathered that the first son of former CBN governor, Aliyu Modibbo Yola, and a former NNN staff member, also died recently while awaiting his entitlement.
