Police on Wednesday in Kano state dispersed protesting students of the state-owned Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education over the sudden closure of their schools.

The students had earlier stormed the busy Kano/Zaria highway for hours to resist the state government’s decision of shutting down their institutions midway into the semester examination.

This is coming after the state Commissioner for Higher Education, announced the closure of all higher institutions in the state, just as her Education counterpart, Sanusi Sa’id Kiru on Tuesday ordered closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state with immediate effect.

However, it is still not clear if the order is related to the recent abduction of hundreds of schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina state or the recent spike in COVID-19 cases.

It was gathered that the protest started when the students were denied entrance to the school by its security when they arrived to sit for their exams.

They accused the state of jeopardising their interest without considering its implication on them and the society in general.

The college Provost, Dr. Yahaya Bunkure, said hoodlums took advantage of the angry students and hijacked the protest to barricade the major highway.
