Following a Daily Trust report on residents’ outcry over piled-up heaps of refuse at the Abaji Area Council’s roundabout along the Abaji-Lokoja expressway, the council authorities have commenced evacuation of the refuse that had piled up in the area.
Abuja Metro had reported in its Monday, October 13, 2025, edition that residents of the council expressed concern over the non-evacuation of refuse at both the roundabout and the back of the Abaji main market entrance that links to the Abattoir in the area, worrying about the health hazard it posed to residents.
Our reporter observed on Monday, at about 4:15 pm, that some labourers were evacuating the refuse into a tipper at the roundabout in the area.
It was also observed that another set of labourers was evacuating refuse that had piled up at the back entrance of the main market as well.
Some labourers, who spoke briefly to our reporter, said they were engaged by a senior official of the Environmental and Sanitation department of the council, who also engaged some tipper drivers to evacuate the refuse at the two strategic places in the area.
“It was the tipper driver that engaged some laborers to evacuate the refuse at the roundabout, including the other one at the back of the entrance gate of the main market, through the office of the Environmental and Sanitation department of the council,” one said.
A staff member of the environmental department who preferred anonymity confided in our reporter that some close friends of the council chairman drew his attention to the newspaper publication about the story on Monday.
This, he said, prompted the council chairman to immediately order the environmental department to immediately hire a tipper and labourers to evacuate the refuse.
“Actually, the council chairman’s attention was drawn to the story in Daily Trust on Monday about the heaps of refuse, which prompted him to immediately call his chief of staff and ask him to release some funds to the head of department of the environmental [department] in order to hire some labourers to immediately commence evacuation of the refuse,” he said.
