The Chairman of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, has said the commission will model the development of the oil-rich Niger Delta after the approach employed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under Minister Nyesom Wike.
He said the initiative aims to transform the region into a hub of modern infrastructure and inclusive growth.
Speaking at the inaugural board meeting of the commission in Abuja on Thursday, Nwuche outlined key priorities, including railways, roads, waterways, electricity, telecommunications, agriculture, and housing.
The former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives stressed that procurement must reflect global best practices.

“Our approach to procurement should be based on the Procurement Act and other extant guidelines. Trust is often lost in public institutions at this stage, so we will adopt transparent and competitive principles to ensure every naira spent delivers maximum impact,” he said.
He added that projects must be executed on time, with contractors treated fairly and transparently.
“We will borrow from models in the FCT, where abandoned projects were speedily completed, new ones delivered within 12 months, and only projects with adequate mobilisation funds awarded,” he said.
Beyond infrastructure, Nwuche said the SSDC will focus on human capital development by empowering youth and women, who have borne the brunt of oil exploration and high unemployment.
He also emphasised collaboration with South-South governors, the National Assembly, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and other partners to avoid duplication and foster synergy.
Reflecting on his past role, Nwuche recalled his involvement in the passage of the NDDC Act as Deputy Speaker in the 4th National Assembly, noting its intention to catalyse Niger Delta development.
“Our country has long held promise, but while contemporaries like Malaysia, China, and Indonesia have advanced, we are still on the journey,” he said.
Also speaking, SSDC Managing Director, Usoro Akpabio, described the Commission as a unique opportunity to lay a solid foundation for the region’s growth.
She said sound policy engagement and strategic partnerships would build the economic backbone of the South-South, ensuring that cities, towns, and rural communities are not left behind but positioned to lead.
