Panic erupted on Tuesday after a tanker explosion occurred at the Alake Sports Complex, Ijeja, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The complex is one of the venues hosting the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival, tagged the Gateway Games 2024.
The fire reportedly broke out during the diesel supply to the venue’s power generator.
Emergency responders arrived promptly and quickly contained the situation.
However, the fire damaged some nearby shops and buildings.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State government assured participating athletes and residents of their safety following the explosion.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, said in a statement that although the incident involved a diesel tanker, the fire was swiftly extinguished to prevent damage.
Akinmade commended the quick response of the state fire service and the vigilance of officials at the venue, assuring festival participants that their safety was guaranteed.
