Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has said the upcoming Bauchi Economic Summit scheduled for October is aimed at harnessing the economic potential of the state.

He said the summit is part of his administration’s multi-sectoral agenda designed to boost the socio-economic development of the state and attract investors from within and outside the country.

In a goodwill message to the people, the governor highlighted the successes recorded under his administration in infrastructure and security, adding that the summit would consolidate these gains.

“Many would argue that we have made inroads into socio-economic and political spheres against all odds. Not only have we been able to govern ourselves, but we have also been able to understand our differences, respect each other’s values, and unite towards developing our country in the 65 years of its chequered history,” Mohammed said.

He noted, however, that Nigeria’s achievements were not commensurate with its years of independence, especially when compared to countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, which gained independence around the same period and are now regarded as Asian Tigers.

“This stunted development is often attributed to the prolonged involvement of the military in the nation’s political trajectory, which retarded the growth of democratic governance and its attendant benefits,” he said.

The governor said 26 years after the return of democracy, the system has taken root, with Nigerians enjoying its dividends.

He urged citizens to remain united and committed to peace, democracy, and nation-building during the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

Describing independence as a milestone that ended colonial domination and granted Nigeria political freedom and opportunities for socio-economic growth, Mohammed called on Nigerians to reflect on whether the noble goals of the nation’s founding fathers had been achieved.

 

He pledged stronger security partnerships and urged citizens to support government initiatives.
