At least 290 households have been displaced following a severe windstorm that caused widespread destruction in Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State.

Dr Goje Muhammad, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), disclosed this during a briefing at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Stakeholders Engagement on the National Disaster Preparedness and Response Campaign (NPRC) in Damaturu.

He said the storm caused multiple injuries and extensive property damage, including collapsed buildings, destroyed market stalls, and roofs torn off homes.

“Many residents were displaced, and emergency rescue operations had to be carried out. We are urging the public to remain vigilant and prepare for future disasters, especially during this rainy season,” Dr Muhammad said.

Dr Muhammad said volunteers have been deployed to assess the extent of damage, and the agency is mobilising relief efforts to provide food and non-food items to affected households.

Earlier, the Director General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, represented by the North East Zonal Director, Mr Yakubu Suleiman, emphasised the importance of disaster risk communication and mitigation strategies.
