Police in Ekiti State have arraigned one Babatunde Opeyemi (20) at the Chief Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti on charges of serious assault and other felonies.
The prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that on August 21 at approximately 5pm, the defendant demanded N50,000 with threats from Eze Chukwuemeka in the Ereguru area of Ado-Ekiti.
Inspector Oriyomi further stated that at the same time and place, within the magisterial district, the defendant willfully obstructed and resisted arrest and seriously assaulted a police officer who was performing his lawful duty.

The prosecutor added that the defendant’s conduct was likely to cause a breach of the peace.
The alleged offenses are punishable under Sections 316, 55, 187(b), and 181(d) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2021.
Counsel for the defendant, Barrister O. G. Abiola, urged the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Abayomi Adeosun, granted him bail in the sum of N60,000 with one surety. The case was adjourned until September 26, for hearing.
