A mob has reportedly manhandled a scavenger identified as Nasiru Yahuza for allegedly stealing two pieces of zinc sheet in Kango community in the Kuje Area Council of the FCT.
A Kango resident, Shuaibu Hussaini, said the incident happened on Saturday, around 5:48 pm, when the suspect allegedly stole two pieces of zinc from a building in the area.
He said the suspect, who was moving around with a cart, was apprehended by a neighbour after he entered an ongoing construction site and quietly removed two pieces of zinc that had been used to fence the building.
“The scavenger was pushing his cart when he quietly entered the building that was fenced with the zinc and removed two pieces from it, without knowing there was a neighbour who saw him,” he said.

He said the neighbour immediately raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of some residents in the area who quickly went after the suspect and assaulted him.
Hussaini said it took the intervention of some vigilantes, who were alerted and rushed to the scene to rescue the scavenger and hand him over to the police in the area.
A member of the vigilante group, Markus Bala, who confirmed the incident, said the scavenger has been handed over to the police.
He decried the activities of some scavengers in the community, noting that residents constantly complain about the theft of their cooking pots, iron rods, and water drums, allegedly by some scavengers.
“In fact, there is no day that passes without a report at the vigilante office that some scavengers have stolen one item or another from houses,” he said.
A police source in the area also confirmed the incident, saying the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
